Summary of activities:
Practical experience – Geotechnical design of earth dams, slope stability in mining and road projects, earth structures for waste disposal in industrial and mining plants.

Academic activities – Supervised 10 D.Sc. and 27 M.Sc. students until 2013, and 17 undergraduate students in Civil Eng. and in Environmental Engineering, with 14 more supervisions under way. Participated in several consulting and research projects, some of them in the coordination, including network research projects. Participated in the organization of congresses and technical meetings, as the ISSMGE Fourth ICEG (Int. Congress on Environmental Geotechnics) in Rio de Janeiro, 2002 (executive secretary). More than 100 publications in journals and international and national congresses proceedings. Participated in the direction of technical committees and regional divisions of the Brazilian Geotechnical Society (ABMS), and in administrative positions at the university.

Research interests:
Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental engineering, with ongoing topics:
• Engineered waste containment facilities
• Remediation techniques – multiphase extraction, electrokinetics
• Long term analysis of tailings dams and mining waste piles
• Environmental impact and control in open detonation military sites
• Transport of contaminants in tropical soils and sediments
