When I first went to Cambridge in 1965, I found there is a strong Imperial-Cambridge-Manchester Triangle in UK. Imperial had good practical Laboratories and Teachers who are involved in real world civil Projects. Their DIC Course was excellent.
Cambridge had very good equipment designed and made by them: Earth Pressure Apparatus; Load Cells and Strain Gauges for stress and strain measurement; scanning electron microscope etc etc. Prof. Roscoe used to be very proud. Manchester also had good Lecturers with Prof. Peter Rowe and was involved in Earth Pressure work etc.
I found that the competitions were very good.
