Presented by Professor David Norbury and Peter Reading

This Eurocode workshop will provide a pragmatic approach to Eurocode compliance with presentations followed by practical exercises and discussions. The day will focus on recent Eurocode developments, as well as looking to the future and what Eurocodes may be just around the corner. The discussion periods of the workshop will largely focus on the impact that these Eurocodes will have on day-to-day works in the geotechnical industry. The content of the workshop will include plenty of data from real working sites and layouts with SPT, laboratory, CPT and Pressuremeter data. The workshop format will be as follows:

Session 1 – Eurocode Update and Designing an Investigation
– Introduction – Where we are now? Recent additions and those codes on their way.
– Does sample quality and class matter?
– Design of the investigation
– Exercise 1 – Designing works to deliver the parameters needed
– Discussion

Session 2 – Choosing the Right Data
– Presentation – Choice of data and data presentation
– Exercise 2 – Using real data: Sorting the wheat from the chaff
– Discussion

Session 3 – Choosing Characteristic Values
– Presentation – Choosing the characteristic values and understanding the factors influencing choice – Exercise 3 – Deciding on characteristic values: Statistical and graphical methods – Discussion

GEOTECHNICAL FOUNDATION DESIGN (Course Data Sheet)

This one day course will provide a general overview of foundation design. It will include an assessment of the use and choice of shallow foundations and piles. It will cover the derivation of bearing capacity formula and their use. Exercises will be carried out to calculate the working loads and settlement of simple foundations. The methods used to calculate these will be in accordance with those described in Eurocode. This course will give a sound first look at foundations for engineers who may have only a limited knowledge of how to design a foundation.
