The objective of the Society when it was created in 1967 by Dr. Za-Chieh Moh was to promote cooperation among engineers, geologists and other scientists in Southeast Asia for the advancement of knowledge in geotechnical engineering. This has clearly been fulfilled over the past years through periodic meetings within the region for discussion of geotechnical engineering topics: geotechnical engineering conference, symposia, seminars and lectures held in the region; publication of a journal which contains papers of interest to geotechnical engineers; and collaboration with the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), International Association of Engineering Geology (IAEG) and the then International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) and such other bodies and societies as appropriate.

Participation in International Society Affairs
The Society has three distinct groups: Engineering Geology, Soil Engineering, and Rock Mechanics. These groups are affiliated with the International Association of Engineering Geology (IAEG), the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), and the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM).
The following major activities from 2001 to 2005 are:
- The Fifteenth ICSMGE took place in Istanbul, Turkey in 2001. Dr. Z.C. Moh and Dr. John Li represented SEAGS in the Council Meeting of ISSMGE. Many SEAGS members attended this conference.
- SEAGS was the host for the Twelfth Asian Regional Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering to be held on 4 to 8 August 2003 in Singapore. The theme of the conference is “Geotechnical Infrastructure for the New Millennium”.
- Prof. D.T. Bergado, Secretary General, and Mr. S.K. Tang, General Committee Member, attended the Council Meeting of ISSMGE in Prague, Czech Republic, 24 August 2003.
- SEAGS was the host for the Fifth Young Geotechnical Conference to be held on 14 to 16 June 2004 in Taipei, Taiwan.
- The Sixteenth International Conference for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (16 ICSMGE) to be held from 12 to 16 September 2005 in Osaka, Japan. Eleven papers were submitted from members of SEAGS. Prof. K.Y. Yong and Prof. D.T. Bergado attended the Counicl Meeting of ISSMGE.
