I am an Associate Professor in Geotechnical Engineering and an expert academic in Civil Engineering Discipline at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS). I received my PhD degree in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in 1997. I have an MSc degree in Geo-environmental Engineering from Shiraz University, and a BSc (Honours) degree in Civil Engineering from the same institution. I have been involved in soil behaviour modelling and ground improvement research since 1993. I have taken an active role in conducting practical research in the characterisation and modification of problematic soils and associated current ground improvement techniques for 20 years. My research has been focused on the theoretical and numerical analysis of soft soils, expansive soils, erodible soils, granular particles and unsaturated porous media with strong applications to real life engineering problems.

I have made several significant contributions of fundamental and pioneering nature. My early work on unsaturated soil mechanics has been increasingly cited in literature and considered as a significant contribution to the field. I received the joint section award for the most valuable paper in 8th ANZ conference on Geomechanics in 1999. I have sound numerical, experimental and programming skills. My research output and publications on geotechnical aspects of rail track foundations overlying soft soil is also extensive, as I was a CRC-RAIL researcher at University of Wollongong, Australia over 5 years. At present, I am the principal supervisor of 7 research students and the co-supervisor of 6 other PhD students. I am a technical reviewer of many International Journals and several Research Organisations. I am also the Deputy Chair of Australian Geomechanics Society (AGS), Engineers Australia, Sydney Chapter. I was the course coordinator of Civil Programs for 5 years, the Acting Head of School of Civil and Environmental Engineering for 1.5 years and the Deputy Head of School for 2.5 years at UTS.
